Alistair Brownlee bested his younger brother Jonathan by six seconds to win gold in the men’s triathlon in 1:45:01 at the Olympics in Rio on Thursday.
Jonathan Brownlee took silver, and Henri Schoeman of South Africa won the bronze medal with a finish 42 seconds back of first.
Alistair becomes the first triathlete to repeat as gold medalist, while Jonathan moves up a spot on the podium after earning bronze in 2012.
American triathlete Ben Kanute had a solid swim, 17:29, before taking to the bike in 10th place. Kanute boosted his position to 7th, but slid back to 10th after transitioning to the run. He’d finish in 29th.
Joe Maloy (23rd) had the best American finish, while Greg Billington sprinted to the finish line for a 1:52.04 time. That was good for 37th.
