Despite holding the lead for large portions of the race, neither France’s Yohann Diniz nor Australia’s Jared Tallent will not take gold in the men’s 50 km race walk.

The near 4-hour race saw Tallent ahead for much of the final 10 km, only to overtaken by Slovakia’s Matej Toth.

Toth, 33, took gold with a time of 3:40.58 in Rio, 28 seconds better than Tallent. The bronze winner is Hirooki Arai of Japan.

Diniz finished 8th after leading almost every moment of the first 30 km (two-plus hours) of the race, but collapsing in visible pain for several minutes. USA’s John Nunn finished 43rd, 35:14 back of Toth.
