France’s Mossely wins nation’s first women’s boxing gold medal

French boxer Estelle Mossely, a two-time European silver medalist, became her nation’s first Olympic medalist in women’s boxing Friday afternoon.

Mossely took gold, as she defeated China’s Yin Junhua by split decision in a tightly contested lightweight (57-60 kg) gold medal bout. Yin got off to the better start of the two, with Mossely getting stronger as the fight progressed and her final round performance ultimately made the difference.

Finland’s Mira Potkonen and Russia’s Anastasiia Beliakova took bronze in the division, with Beliakova defeating American Mikaela Mayer in the quarterfinal round.
