Maybe Rory McIlroy didn’t want to play in the Rio Olympics because he didn’t consider Olympic golf that prestigious. Or because of the politics concerning which country he would represent.
But the reason he gave for withdrawing in June was the Zika virus, which is the topic a 9-year-old named Billy danced around in an interview.
“If you’re so tough, how come you’re so scared of a little, tiny mosquito?” Billy asked.
“Good question, good question,” the four-time major champion said. “I think, when I get older, if I want to grow up, and I want to have kids, then it might have been a good decision. Everything that happened in the Olympics went well, and I’m glad that it all did go well. But a few people used that excuse, and I sort of jumped on the bandwagon.”
McIlroy was also asked about Tiger Woods, his past hairstyles and a question that conjured his former fiancée, Denmark Olympic tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.Follow @nzaccardi
