Boston, Budapest among cities mulling future Olympic bids

Now that the three finalists to host the 2022 Winter Olympics have been announced, it isn’t too early to start considering where the three subsequent Olympic Games will be held – at least that’s what pundits and officials from Boston to Budapest are saying.

Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy set off a round of debate when he called the idea of Boston hosting the 2024 Summer Games “preposterous,”a declaration that has since been rebuffed by many. The USOC will decide next year which city among Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. it will present to the IOC to be considered to host the 2024 Games.

Meanwhile, Salt Lake City, which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, is looking to get its name onto the short list of cities that would be considered as a host for the 2026 Winter Games. That honor would also make it the second American city to host the Winter Olympics; Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.

Americans aren’t the only ones planning ahead. Officials in Budapest told the Budapest Business Journal they think the Hungarian capital would be a great host of the 2028 Summer Games, and hope that hosting the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival could serve as proof that the city could manage the 34th Olympiad.

The IOC announced Monday, July 7 that it will choose between Beijing, Oslo and Almaty, Kazakhstan to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. That decision is scheduled for July 31, 2015. The 2020 Summer Games will be held in Tokyo, the 2018 Winter Games will be hosted by Pyeongchang South Korea and the 2016 Summer Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, which is having a dry run for that event as it hosts the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

IOC announces 3 finalists to host 2022 Winter Olympics

The IOC announced Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, and Oslo as the three finalists for the 2022 Winter Games Monday.

The decision was made at the IOC’s executive board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. The move was widely expected, according to the AP, after three other cities – Krakow, Poland; Liviv, Ukraine, and Stockholm had previously withdrawn from contention.

Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Games, and would become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics. It has proposed hosting Alpine events at a location 120 miles outside the Chinese capital. With the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the 2020 Summer Games to be held in Tokyo, it is reportedly unlikely the IOC would select an East Asian nation as a host city three times in a row.

Oslo hosted the 1952 Winter Games, but the Norwegian government has still not fully committed to hosting the Games, according to the AP. If awarded the 2022 Games, Oslo would become the fourth city to host two Winter Olympics, following in the footsteps of Lake Placid, N.Y., in 1932 and 1980; St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1928 and 1948; and Innsbruck, Austria, in 1964 and again in 1976 (a late switch to Innusbruck was made for the 1976 Games after Denver was awarded, then withdrew from hosting those Games).

Almaty, also known as Alma-Ata, was the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan as well as independent Kazakhstan from 1991 to 1997. It would be the first Central Asian nation to host an Olympics.

The IOC’s evaluation commission will visit each city next year, with the final decision scheduled to be announced on July 31, 2015.

The bids are in for the 2022 Olympics, and there are no surprises.

The five cities that previously announced intentions to host the 2022 Winter Olympics made it official by Friday’s deadline to submit application files.

They are Beijing; Oslo; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Krakow, Poland and Lviv, Ukraine.

Beijing’s group previously said it planned to hold some events in Zhangjiakou. Krakow’s group previously said it planned to hold some events in Jasna, Slovakia. That could still be the case, but the official bids are single-city ones.

The International Olympic Committee’s executive board will decide which cities advance to a final stage in Lausanne, Switzerland, from July 7-9.

The IOC will vote to select the host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, could become the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Games. Oslo hosted the 1952 Olympics. Kazakhstan, Poland and Ukraine have never hosted an Olympics.
