Synchro: USA’s Alvarez and Koroleva qualify for Tuesday’s final

Team USA synchronized swimming duo Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva followed up their ninth-place finish in duets free routine with a similar score on Monday.

Alvarez and Koroleva posted an 86.4612 in duets technical, slightly higher than their Sunday debut, good for a qualifying finish of ninth place.

That’s about 21.6 points shy of first-placed duo Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia, and 14.6 back of bronze.

The USA pairing has qualified for Tuesday’s duets free routine final.

Team USA’s Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva scored a 86.43 in preliminary action of duets free routine on Sunday as the U.S. opened synchronized swimming at the Rio Olympics.

That was good for ninth place out of 24 teams, 11.63 points behind leaders Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia.

The final is Tuesday.

Americans Mariya Koroleva and Anita Alvarez qualified for the Olympic synchronized swimming duet by finishing seventh in a competition Thursday.

Koroleva, who made her second Olympic team, and Alvarez, who will make her Olympic debut in Rio, needed to finish in the top 11 of an Olympic qualifier in Rio to clinch a Games berth.

Koroleva finished 11th at the London Olympics in the duet with Mary Killman.

The U.S. last earned an Olympic synchronized swimming medal in 2004. It last took gold in 1996.

Russia dominates the sport, taking team and duet gold medals in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.

The U.S. failed to qualify a synchronized swimming team for the Olympics and hasn’t done so since 2008.
